A marine police officer is the surprise winner of this week’s Mark Six jackpot, scooping over HK$69 million from a single HK$10 bet made over the phone. The lucky officer, who works in the department’s small boat division, was not at work when he placed his winning bet and was on leave at the time. He told the Post that he would use the prize money to buy a new vehicle and invest some of it.

Despite having no first-prize winner, the latest New Year Snowball draw saw the jackpot increase to a record HK$140 million. This is a result of the number of second-prize winners, and not because people are buying fewer tickets. According to lottery organisers, the higher prize amounts are to encourage more participants to buy tickets and boost sales.

The BOCHK Science and Technology Innovation Prize is a prestigious international science award in Hong Kong that recognises individuals or teams for their pioneering discoveries and the significant application and transformation of their research achievements for the benefit of society. It inspires scientific researchers and innovators to persist in innovative exploration, establish themselves in Hong Kong, serve the nation, and contribute to the world.

This year’s award received nominations from universities and the public, including local and overseas scholars and experts, and was reviewed by a panel of distinguished academics. The winning candidate will receive a cash prize of HK$2,000,000, a certificate and a trophy. The awards are presented at an annual ceremony, with representatives of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and the sponsoring enterprises attending as officiating guests.

In addition, the Shaw Prize Foundation and the Hong Kong Science Museum jointly organise “2024 The Future Science Prize Exhibition” to introduce this year’s Shaw Laureates, their research journey and achievements through exhibits and provide accessible scientific knowledge. The exhibition is open to the general public from today (October 4) to November 4 at the G/F Exhibition Hall.

Another competition is the Hari Art Prize 2024, which aims to recognise self-taught artists and recent art graduates who have just started their careers. It is open to all genres of artwork, and submissions can be submitted online.

The HK Global Development Prize, organised by Generocity, is seeking innovative ideas that can help shape Hong Kong’s role in global development efforts and improve the lives of people around the world. Applicants can submit their entries through the online platform until January 28.
